Mr Bongo Brazil 45’s

Sometimes inspiration can hit you in the most unexpected places. I was recently in Phonica Records, Soho feeding my vinyl habit when I noticed some really colourful patterns on the inners of these Mr Bongo Brazil 45’s. There are about 40 of them and every single one is different. I absolutely love the simplicity of these and the colour layering. It’s fair to say i’m obsessed with them. I bought 9 in one week and they’re all killer!

Three Colour Success

The last attempt at a 2 colour print proved to be quite a drama as I didn’t pre-wash the fabric. This meant that when I came to the second print the whole design had shrunk by 0.5cm causing all manner of problems and swear words. The problem with teaching yourself a technique is you only ever learn by mistakes. Everything I do at the moment is an experiment and i’m still trying to work out what direction to take my designs, i’m exploring different styles at moment and hopefully I’ll make a decision soon. In the meantime i’m having fun exploring and learning.

I decided to start from scratch with a new design and a slightly new printing technique, scanning paper shapes I’d cut out with some weird, photocopied textures from my Uni days. I really miss the aesthetic effects of photocopying images. It’s still a dream of mine to own one.

I pre- washed the fabric this time and cut the fabric lengths slightly shorter. I’m thrilled to say it was a great success. In fact, I nearly shed a tear when the third colour went down; it’s the best feeling when everything works, especially when you’ve spent so long preparing. It’s hard to explain how wonderful it feels to put a design onto fabric.

I’m now in the process of making them into cushions.

Problems and Progress

The last printing session should have been fairly simple. The plan was to make a two colour print. The first colour went down fine but as soon as I started the second colour it just wouldn’t line up. After measuring the fabric I released that the fabric had actually shrunk by 5mm. Hopefully they will be finished in time for the November market.

I will be at the October Feast Market in West Norwood on Sunday 4th October from 10-4pm. See you there!

Neon and Black

I went wild at my last printing session and used some neon pink paint on my large twiggy design.  I’m really pleased with the results and have made a few purses from the fabric. I’ve been printing lots of black ink recently but the first batch came out a weird slate colour. On the second batch I put a lot more ink in and they came out a lot better. There should be a whole selection of new designs and colours for the next West Norwood Feast market in September.

One Hour Pattern Challenge

I cut these shapes out with card a few weeks ago and they’ve been sitting on my desktop in a “TO DO” folder ever since. Tonight I decided to quickly turn them into a pattern. These small evening projects are great because you don’t spend too much time thinking about the layout it can give you other ideas for patterns and colours. I’m going to make a few “collections” using these shapes and colours.

Welcome to KVIST

Welcome to KVIST (it’s Swedish for Twig.)  I’ve just changed the name and have been moving everything and adjusting things ready for the launch. Now i’m all set up you can expect to see more patterns prints and hopefully some exciting new designs in the next few weeks. I have a twitter page @thisiskvist and instagram page @thisiskvist so you can keep up-to-date. I will be at the West Norwood Feast Market tomorrow so do come over and say hello!

One Hundred Record Sleeves

When a good friend suggested I help him out on a special Record Store Day vinyl release my first reaction was “no way, it’ll be too expensive, it’ll go wrong, etc etc.” Then I saw sense and decided to try it out, printing on paper for the first time in over 10 years. I’m so glad I took on the challenge because I think they came out rather well.  It took 2 days to complete the limited edition run of Torridon Gate by Howlround and it took even less time to completely sell out! Hopefully this will lead the way to some more exciting collaborations and commissions. A big thanks to Jonny for the excellent studio photos!

West Norwood Feast Market

This Easter Sunday from 10 – 4pm I will be having my first ever stall at the West Norwood Feast Market. I’ve been having some fun with the branding side of running a tiny little business. In the past I made the mistake of turning up with a just dusty cloth and a pocketful of change. This time i’m making sure i’ve got a logo, banners, tags, business cards, fun little accessories and nicely printed price tags too. I ordered a stamp to personalise some tags and have had few trips to Tiger, my new favourite shop. So if you live in the South London area do pop along and say hello. I’ll be selling my full range of hand printed purses, bags and cushions.

Print Of The Week: IKONIK series by Darling Clementine

Every so I often I come across a design or illustration that sends me into an enthusiastic frenzy. This happened again last week when I discovered the amazing IKONIK series by a Norwegian duo who call themselves Darling Clementine. I completely love everything about this series. The shapes look like rough paper cut-outs and the use of the same 3 or 4 colours is just really inspiring. This work is so close the the kind of designs I’m working towards. If you look at my previous post you’ll see how the colours i’ve been using are rather similar. Take a look at their full range on the Darling Clementine website

Pattern Inspiration from Crumbs and Doilies

Lately i’ve been working on some repeat patterns for a notebook cover and have been playing around with layouts and colour combinations. It’s really tough when designing to make decisions and stick to them; it’s very tempting to add too much of everything. The other day I bought a cupcake from Crumbs and Doilies and the packaging it came in gave me a great idea. I took the design I was working on, spaced everything out and make objects a lot smaller. I’m super pleased with the result, it’s amazing how a bit of space can change the feel of a pattern. I can see this working on wrapping paper, a t-shirt or notebook.
